The Band of the Mercian Regiment

The Mercian Regiment was formed on the 1st September 2007 from an amalgamation of The 22nd Cheshire Regiment, The Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment and The Staffordshire Regiment. The Mercian Regiment Reserves battalion was formed from The West Midlands Regiment and The Kings Cheshire Regiment, and this includes The Band of the Mercian Regiment.

The Band of the Mercian Regiment is based in Wolverhampton and comprises of Army Reserve Musicians from all over the Mercian area. They balance their wide range of civilian occupations with their Reserve commitments, and as part of this, they are involved in a huge variety of concerts and parades locally, nationally and internationally in support of many regimental, ceremonial and charity events.

Director of Music—Captain Ian Johnson

Captain Ian Johnson joined The Band of The Mercian Regiment in 2019 when he retired from the Band of the Scots Guards and transferred from regular service to reserve service. Captain Johnson, who grew up in the Wolverhampton area, has an impressive regular career including time serving both as a musician and a medic. He brings with him a wealth of experience and a particular interest in jazz and contemporary music. Captain Johnson balances running a HR Consultancy Business with his duties as Director of Music and, in addition to the Mercians, he can regularly be seen performing as part of contemporary groups and brass bands around the Midlands area.
